For the Grand Tour our car of choice is the mighty Hermann (full name: Hermann Zer German). He is a 1967 Mercedes SL250, known as Pagodas because of the hard top shape. But we are going soft top and plan to do a Lucy Jordan through Paris. If your car is old enough they let you into the low emissions zone. Let’s hope classic cars are granted such privileges in future.
In his time with us Hermann has had a new radiator, new power steering pump, complete brake and servo overhaul, throttle rod tuning, correct Michelin tyres, dampers, diff seals and most recently a rebuilt gearbox (after nearly not making it home from Ghent). He has a small manageable electrical leak, a new battery and a whumping great lithium battery jumper. There are Mercedes garages all the way across Europe, and we are taking our finest credit cards.
In case you were worried, Hermann is also equipped with the finest piece of miles/kilometres conversion equipment to keep us legal. We found it in the glove box when we bought him, it had been carefully laminated and contains a reassuring level of accuracy. No more of those “50kph in town is roughly 30mph” approximations for us.
