It only takes a half a day…

In which Sid and Doris transfer from the inedible to the sublime

Up for breakfast opening time and then Doris asks Sid to drive with no more than due dispatch to the port as we are on our minute. Overtaking buses and not really exceeding the speed limit still only gives three minutes in hand but we’ve had closer MTCs.

Boarding for the Fred Olsen through-ferry touching La Gomera (touching at Los Christianos where we do NOT get off) using green ticket and please put your double indicators on when boarding – sensible as always and, despite Doris’ fretting, very tolerant of late arrivals (and anyway we had 3 mins in hand) Shugi parked up under the ship’s workshop.

A cheery walker from Winchester gave us these odd factoids about mountains here and on larger islands. The peak on La Palma at 2,426 meters is higher than Australia’s Mount Kosciuszko 2,228. Also, Tiede at 3,715 m the highest in Spain is about the same height as New Zealand’s Aoraki / Mount Cook and Mount Fuji. Sid considers that some people know some pretty weird things

Coming to the Fred Olsen owned Hotel Jardin Tecina is rather like arriving in Portmerion, with added golf, tennis and pools. The whole place has been given a nine month makeover to a good quality and compares very well to the Princess Stalag Luft 4- at about the same price. Sprits soar, and are not expensive.

We are too late for hotel lunch so take the lift down to the beach and walk along to the foot ferry harbour, where of course there are restaurants open. The hotel is on the cliff top.

Not everyone has come for the walking. These ladies paint, though not anything we can see around here.

In Spain Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve and Epiphany anchor the holiday and make sure children are still Nice all the way through to the arrival of the Three Kings with more merriment and presents

Final sign off: Epiphany is everywhere …

…Caspar, Melchior and Belthazar.

Sid and Doris have been very good.

  1. “Sid considers that some people know some pretty weird things.” Only just now? No… And who knew the 3 Kings drove a VW?
