Off to walk the Weavers’ Way

In which Sid and Doris decide that they need to be flat out for a bit.

In 2019 Sid and Doris decided to cycle to Istanbul and are now wondering if they might like to go for a longish walk. So before shutting the door and walking to Rome (or some other damn fool escapade) maybe we should try a shortish epic walk. Wily Sid has found the Weavers’ Way in Norfolk, about 60 miles from Cromer to Great Yarmouth. Though January is not often a great month for walking in the Northern hemisphere this route may be quite suitable for a warm up. One, it is in Norfolk (Very flat, Norfolk. Copyright Noel Coward) and two the walk uses abandoned railway lines and three is allegedly well signposted.

Discussing the right conditions Sid and Doris settle on NAR (not actually raining), and as it is not forecast to rain why not do it right now?

Sid does the initial research and then goes off to school to torment innocent children with English spelling, measuring perimeters of simple shapes and a brief project on the eruption at Pompeii. All goes well at school and when Sid gets home Doris has done all of the route finding and hotel booking. This is quite tricky because although these routes are put together to encourage tourism the route is not yet on a par with the Pennine Way.

So the Duo set off on an officially lovely crisp day heading for Great Yarmouth, where to stay the first night, leave the car and set off for Cromer by taxi the next day.

And getting to Norfolk we check for flat.  If we do later decide to walk to Rome we may have to find some hills to practise with. [It is hard to show how really flat the countryside is in a photo, please use your imagination – D.]

PS On the way we pass this signpost.  Read literally, it is a place selling supplies – ie everyday equipment – for period homes.  We are thinking Izal toilet paper, blue-tinted margarine for wartime diets… More creativity will beckon.

  1. Ah, walking tours seem all the rage this year! My sister & hubby are going to do the Ridgeway (so socks were justifiably included in their xmas prezzies – high tech socks, that is, whereas knitted grey socks will fit in better with your izal toilet paper-?)
P.S. NAR …like it. It’s stuck in my mind now. Do I want to go out on bike? Is it NAR NAW NAF? OK then….

    1. Tell them not to worry about doing the Weavers’ Way 🙂 🙂 Also high tech socks will be a fab gift, especially if they are the sort of material that dries easily overnight on a feebly chill-off one-star hotel radiator.
