How to catch a laurel wreath; where do Christmas presents really come from; Christmas fun for all the family; your pillows are the wrong shape. In Murcia town centre there is a plinth celebrating the various children of the town who have achieved artistic things – one side each for painting, music, etc. The statue on the top emphasises that laurel wreaths are not presented to you easily, they have to be worked for and efforts made to catch them.
Talking of presents, here is the Spanish equivalent of the postbox to Santa. You will see there are three slots, because the presents are, as you know, brought by the three kings. One slot for Caspar, one for Melchior and one for Balthazar. Choose your slot with care (I personally always had a sweet spot for Melchior) phrase your letter diligently and you still need to be good until January 6th because that is when the 3 Kings turn up and that is when you will/might get your presents, small child.
In the town square they are setting out lots and lots and lots of chairs (never mind social distancing) for something billed as “Surefolk: Pepica y los Bichejos”. As we walk back past, families are queueing up to take their seats for something that looks like it is going to be pretty special. And just for you, my diligent and cherished and almost certainly by now only reader, I have found a YouTube clip of the show that I missed. It’s not high art but it’s a little insight into someone else’s Christmas culture.
Back at the hotel and we have now moved from the region with square pillows to the region with long thin pillows. I know we seasoned travellers are supposed to tolerate and indeed embrace or celebrate other cultures, but these people are wrong , I tell you, WRONG. And the other people were wrong too. Pillows should be rectangular, nothing else is acceptable.
PS and your rectangular shape has the wrong proportions too.
I have heard that some multicultural households have tense discussions on the proper and correct dimensions for pillows.
…while each party maintains that not only is their choice of shape correct, but also that the bed itself has to be symmetrical…
