Headwinds

From “S”:

Sid and Doris were getting a bit grumpy today about the headwind.

I know a lot about headwinds.

Our home, Adventure Headquarters, is at the Langstone Harbour end of the Southsea promenade, just opposite the justly-famous Hayling Island Ferry. And I quite often get trusted with an errand to cycle the Adventure Tricycle to the Eastney Convenience Store so that we can stock up on carrots and sprinkles and other favourite snacks.

It’s a funny thing about winds, but on a round trip to the Eastney Convenience Store I always find I have a headwind on part of the journey. In fact it seems to me that the faster I get to the Eastney Convenience Store, the slower I am getting back. Odd, that.

Anyway my hero “G” says that there is no point moaning about headwinds, they are just a fact of cycling life. (I wish Sid and Doris would pay more attention to that!) So I have called my headwind Edwin, as in Edwin the ‘eadwind! Funny, eh?! And my other joke is to say that it is “a bit Winnie the Pooh”, as in “Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day”.

Oh and by the way, the others have invented a top weather-forecasting device. We used to have a bit of seaweed on a stick outside Adventure Headquarters but I think it blew away in one of the storms over the winter. Now they just send me outside for a while and then look at my fur when they let me back in. If it’s wet, it’s raining. If it’s all blown over to one side, it’s windy. Isn’t that clever? I wish I’d thought of that!
