This may look a bit casual but we have given some thought to the route.
How long do we have? We can leave on May 15th, after the Plains Rally (Sid) and the Sweet Adelines Convention (Doris). And we need to be back in time for the Goodwood Revival when we will see so many of our friends, in early September. So we can take 120 days.
How far can we go? If we cycle about 100 kms per day and cycle on 100 days we can go 10,000 kms (or 6,250 miles).
So where might that let us go? If you look at the picture you will see a loop of string which in the same scale as the map gives about that distance, allowing for wiggles. We moved the string about on the map until we arrived at the route you see on Doris’s swoop map. Istanbul as bottom right of the journey before turning west for Greece, Italy, France, Spain and home.
And which places shall we go through to get to Istanbul? A lot of that came from reading Simon Winder’s books Germania and Danubia. These make reading history a delight and help us think about what to see. Recommended reading (along with some other books listed here).
So we have some ideas about where we might go. And you can come too. Of course we might have enough somewhere in Holland. Cheer us on.
