The Un-Nailed God

In which Doris muses on religious symbolism.

Other religions may observe that Christians worship a little skinny guy having the worst day of his life, and many Catholics make a particular point of having statues of him with all the gory details highlighted.

Many, but not all Catholics.  You may remember this statue which we spotted in Gyor, in Hungary, which was the first time we’d ever seen a crucifix without all four limbs firmly nailed down.

And now we see that the main cathedral in Mexico City has this rood screen with a couple of interesting details.

And this statue too.

Generally in South American churches they seem to like Jesus to look a little warmer around the middle region.  Ideally with tassels.

 

 

Was that a bolt of lightning outside?  Are summer storms usual in Mexico City?  I’d better stop writing this.

  1. I don’t know about lightning…that’s your problem…I need to clean up the cereal I spit out while laughing…maybe lightning is my problem, too?
