Weights – Pre-departure weigh-in

When we’ve been talking to people about the Epic Journey, most people say “oh gosh you will lose tons of weight”.

“Not so”, we reply.  “Yes indeed we will come back with legs like bags of walnuts and leathery faces with far-away gazes, but in fact you have to eat like a demon on a cycling trip. so we reckon we’ll come back weighing the same as when we left.”

True or not?  Here are the departure statistics:

Sid: 153lbs first thing in the morning, 158lbs in full cycling gear.
Sid’s bike: 34lbs (including racks, lights etc and 1 full bidon).
Sid’s bike with luggage on: 61lbs, so 27lbs of luggage.

Doris: 150lbs first thing in the morning, 155lbs in full cycling gear.
Doris’s bike: 29lbs (including racks, navigational gear and 1 full bidon).
Doris’s bike with luggage on: 46lbs, so 17lbs of luggage.

For Continental comparisons, let’s say our personal starting weights are 70kg and 68kg, and if we find any weighing machines in the hotel bedrooms on the way round we’ll let you know how things progress.
